Default How CeCe Winans Swerved Adom FM

It was the perfect promoter’s nightmare. The concert venue had been secured, the $40,000 artiste fee had been paid in full, flight arrangements for the bandsmen had been completed and so had the demands stated in the star performer’s rider met.

All over in the capital, three dedicated FM radio stations had been pushing the concert commercials, a number of newspapers, including yours truly Graphic Showbiz had been excitedly carrying stories on the Cece Winans show, and ticket sales had been picking up.

Then barely 24 hours to the show, booom! Everything was off.

Disoriented as they were, it took poor Adom FM three whole days to brace up and issue a press statement to explain themselves: “Management of Adom 106.3FM wishes to apologise to patrons, sponsors and the general public for the last-minute postponement of Adom Praiz 2010 which was scheduled for Saturday August 7, 2010, following the inability of the headline artiste, CeCe Winans and her 14-member band to fly down to Accra for the show due to challenges in flight schedules from the US.

“The challenges were occasioned by complications with ticketing and flight confirmation for the crew of the 14-piece band and their preferred routing from various states across the US.

“We are still in intense discussions with the management team of CeCe Winans, looking at the options available for immediate rescheduling of the show. We wish to assure all our cherished patrons, sponsors and the general public that a new date will be announced as soon as new arrangements are concluded to bring down the American gospel song diva.

“We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience that this unfortunate development might have caused you and we pray that you will have faith in us to deliver on this major international gospel show.

“Patrons who have already purchased tickets for the show are assured that their investment is safe. For those who prefer immediate refund, the centres are Joy FM at Kokomlemle and Adom FM at Aggrey Road, Tema Community Two”, the statement said.

Although the Adom statement did not go into details, Showbiz can reveal that for weeks, and especially during the last few days prior to the show, Cece Winans did indeed put Adom FM on a hot grill.

According to Adom Programmes Director Ahuma Bosco Ocansey, initially it was agreed that Cece Winans and band would arrive in Accra on Friday August 6, perform the following day and leave on Sunday.

This arrangement kept shifting back and forth until only a couple of days to the event when the band finally decided that they would arrive by noon on Saturday, perform in the evening and fly out immediately after the concert. Whew!

By last Tuesday, Adom FM had bent so much backward that their heads were almost touching their heels. Still they were ready to play ball. “We were determined to pull this show through despite the odds,” Bosco told Showbiz.

The new arrangement, Showbiz investigations found, also complicated flight arrangements for the band members who were to converge in New York from various destinations as far flung as Toronto in Canada, Los Angeles and Chicago. It turned out that some were not going to be able to make the scheduled flight and therefore the who trip was abandoned.

At the time of going to press, a number of patrons had been to the Adom FM designated points to claim refunds for their tickets. Many more, however, it was learnt, were holding on to hear when the new date would be.

Some local promoters of international gigs that Showbiz spoke with were full of sympathy for the situation that Adom FM has found itself in. They however put the blame on the inexperience of the Adom team for whom promoting such a big concert was their first.

Adom Praiz 2010 was to be the second an the annual gospel fiesta. “It is going to be one fantastic international gospel show and that’s a promise,” said the Events and Promotions Manager of the station, Ricky Anokye.

“It will be five hours of thrilling music. We delivered well last year and patrons got the thrill of their lives but this year is going to be even much better.”

Billed to appear on the programme with the multiple-award winning American gospel singer were several popular Ghanaian acts such as Soul Winners, Sam and Steve, Bernice Offei, Willie and Mike, Florence Obinim, No Tribe, Cecilia Marfo and DSP Kofi Sarpong.

CeCe Winans is noted for her sleek, almost ‘fragile’ voice, yet very commanding. Her free-flowing lyrics, spiced with evergreen melodies, always evoke adoration from patrons everywhere she performs.

Her well-loved albums include Alone In His Presence (1995) Everlasting Love (1998), Alabaster Box (1999), CeCe Winans (2001), Throne Room (2003), Purified (2005) and Thy Kingdom Come (2008).

Adom Praiz 2010 was being sponsored by Zain, Regency Alliance Insurance, PHC Motors, Perga Transport, Meridian Pre-University, Elite Kingdom, Royal Mirage Hotel, Pan-African Trade Fair, Nixan Cables Ghana, Borges Olive Oil and SSNIT.

If she bailed out at the last minute for no tangible reason but the flight problem, then that is most unfortunate.

wow. Adom fm made so much noise about this concert. I hope they sort things out for it to happen. A lot of people are dying to see Cece Winans.
