Default Iranian Footballer Fired For Not Fasting

Popular Iranian footballer Ali Karimi, sometimes described as "the Maradona of Asia," has been fired by his club for not fasting during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, the club said on Sunday.

Steel Azin FC said on its website www.steelazin.com that it was "forced to sack one of its players, Ali Karimi, for being disobedient and not fasting during Ramadan," when devout Muslims fast from dawn until dusk.

Karimi, who was the Asian Player of 2004, had even "insulted officials of the (Iranian) football federation and the Tehran team's supervisor who confronted him on the issue," Steel Azin said.

The player himself denied any wrongdoing. "I am a Muslim and I believe in religious questions," Karimi told ISNA news agency, also denying that he had insulted Iranian football officials.

His sacking comes after he criticized in an interview on his website the management style of the club's managing director and former official of Iran's Revolutionary Guards, Mostafa Ajorlou.

The Islamic republic's state news agency IRNA, meanwhile, reported that the club's chairman, Hossein Hedayati, was unaware of the decision and was against Karimi's sacking.

Karimi, 31, who has been dubbed by some Iranian commentators as Maradona of Asia, is the second most capped player and the third highest scorer for the Iranian national team.

He also had a two-year stint in the Bundesliga, scoring four goals in 50 appearances for Bayern Munich.

Ramadan started in Iran on Thursday and under Iranian laws, all Muslims are required to observe the holy month, while those who do not fast, including non-Muslims, are expected to abstain from eating or drinking in public.

Muslims observe Ramadan by abstaining from food, drink and sex from dawn until sunset. Pregnant and menstruating women, the sick, travellers and pre-pubescent children are exempt from the fast.

this is a case the players union will have to address. FIFA has no jurisdiction in this matter since the issue at hand doesn't involve the confederation.

The club is being unfair. I know a moslem athlete who has on several occasions, postponed fasting in order to compete in some meets. He later fasted to make up for the days he missed. No biggie.

Default Iran Star Ali Karimi Fined For Not Fasting

Former Bayern Munich star Ali Karimi has been reinstated by his club in Iran after being sacked for not fasting during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.

The 2004 Asian footballer of the year, who has made 112 appearances for Iran and is his country's third-highest scorer, was still fined $40,000 by Steel Azin FC.

The club's disciplinary committee found Karimi guilty of disrespecting Iran's football federation and the club's supervisor, as well as not fasting during a training session on August 12.

Karimi, dubbed by some Iranian commentators as the Maradona of Asia, was sacked in mid-August after having questioned decisions by the club's managing director and former commander of Iran's Revolutionary Guards, Mostafa Ajorlou.

    Denies wrongdoing

The 31-year-old midfielder has denied any wrongdoing and insisted he has always heeded religious values, especially during Ramadan when devout Muslims fast from dawn until dusk.

He is the Iranian national team's second most capped player, and played at the World Cup in 2006.

He had a two-year stint in the Bundesliga, scoring four goals in 50 appearances for Bayern Munich.

Ramadan started in Iran on August 12 and under Iranian laws, all Muslims are required to observe the holy month, while those who do not fast, including non-Muslims, are expected to abstain from eating or drinking in public.

Steel Azin said late on Tuesday that Karimi would only play again once he had settled his fine.
