Default Man, 27, In Tragic Death

A 27-year-old man was yesterday killed when the cylinder of a six-kilogramme dry chemical powder fire extinguisher he was servicing at Asawasi in Kumasi exploded, blowing off the upper part of his head.

The deceased, identified as Clement Adutwum, a resident of Amakom in Kumasi, suffered severe head injuries and died on the spot.
His, brother, Kwadwo Owusu, 36, was visibly shaken when he saw the lifeless body of Adutwum.

Residents of Asawasi and its environs rushed to the scene in their numbers to witness the tragic incident, the first of its kind at Fire Consultancy and Engineering, the firm where Adutwum was an employee.

The incident brought vehicular traffic to a halt, as motorists and pedestrians rushed to the scene to satisfy their curiosity.

Women who could not control their emotions wept uncontrollably, wondering how the young man could suffer such a fate.

Adutwum was said to have worked at Fire Consultancy and Engineering for a little over a year and had, therefore, acquired considerable experience in the servicing of fire extinguishers.

According to a co-worker, Mr Charles Yibor, the incident occurred around 10 a.m., moments after Adutwum had finished servicing the six-kilogramme dry powder cylinder and was screwing the lid back on with a spanner when it exploded.

The owner of the company, one Elder Apraku, was said to have travelled to Nkawie and could, therefore, not be reached for his comment.

When the Daily Graphic visited the scene, policemen had just arrived there but they were yet to begin their investigations.

Adutwum’s brother, Owusu, who could hardly control his emotions, expressed concern over the safety of workers at the place.

He said the company had not put in place any safety measures to adequately protect workers, resulting in his brother’s tragic death.

He pleaded with the police to unravel the mystery surrounding the tragedy to prevent a similar incident in the future.

Definitely not a pretty way to go. Sad indeed.
