Default Bafana Bafana Wary of The Black Stars

New South Africa coach Pitso Mosimane expects his charges to come fighting against Ghana next week but fears the Black Stars could give him a baptism of fire in his first match in charge of the Bafana Bafana.

Mosimane, who took over the reins of the team from Brazilian coach Carlos Alberto Parreira, will rely on South Africa’s World Cup squad to face the strong Ghanaian team in the August 11 friendly match at the Soccer City stadium in Johannesburg.

After naming his team at the South Africa Football Association (SAFA) headquarters yesterday, Mosiname admitted he may not get the expected start against Africa’s torchbearers at the World Cup.

“It could be a baptism of fire for me against a side like Ghana,” Mosimane said. “But I prefer a baptism of fire against a side like Ghana than to win against Swaziland or Lesotho.”

The South African coach called all his England-based World Cup players including captain Aaron Mokoena, Steven Pienaar of Everton and Fulham's Kagisho Dikgacoi.

But there was no place for an overweight Benni McCarthy who was dropped from Bafana’s Wold Cup squad and at 32 is now at the twilight of his international career.

The only surprise inclusion was Kaizer Chiefs striker Sthembiso Ngcobo who, together with Holland-based Bernard Parker and Mamelodi Sundowns’ Katlego Mphela, form the attackers in the 22-man squad.

Next Wednesday’s friendly will be the first match at the iconic stadium since the World Cup final on July 11 and is expected to attract a sell-out crowd ostensibly because of Ghana who will parade its star performers at the World Cup as well as the massive support the team enjoyed from South Africans.

Yesterday SAFA announced it had sold over 30,000 tickets for the match at R30 ($15) each.
For Coach Mosimane, the match forms part of his preparation for their Nations Cup qualifier against Niger. And he expects his charges to reproduce the kind of form that saw them defeating France 2-1 at the group stage.

“It’s important to do well and get a good result against Ghana, a side that shone at the World Cup, as it will show the credibility of the team.”

Even in the event of an unlikely home defeat, the South African coach says he will not have any regrets but look into the future with hope.
“Ghana are world class and are bringing their best side to play us.

    Pitso Mosimane

It will be a big test for me and the players and I aim to come through with a win and set up a foundation for Niger and the 2010 Nations Cup qualifying campaign.”

Ghana’s coach Milovan Rajevac omitted six members of his World Cup team — Stephen Appiah, Sulley Muntari, John Paintsil, Isaac Vorsah, Prince Tagoe and Quincy Owusu-Abeyie — from the South Africa game and also excused Chelsea’s Michael Essien to enable him continue his rehabilitation after a long layoff.

The whole world is wary of Ghana now adays. We will make the South Africans sweat come August 11th. Another opportunity for Milo to stamp his mark on the doubting thomases.

Playing South Africa is cool but the second friendly is really whack. Why are we playing against Zimbabwe on Sept 8th? When we beat all these useless teams, it doesn't add any value to our team. We need to play better friendlies and forgets these low ranking teams. Unless someone is enriching his pocket from these games.
