United head to America without a host of stars

Manchester United jetted off to America for their pre-season tour on Monday with a host of star names missing from Alex Ferguson's squad.

Ferguson is without club captain Gary Neville due to a calf problem, while Rio Ferdinand is still sidelined with the knee injury he suffered just before the World Cup.

Michael Owen is unavailable as he recovers from a hamstring injury and midfielders Antonio Valencia and Anderson are also ruled out with ankle and knee problems respectively.

Owen Hargreaves, who has been hampered by a series of knee problems and will miss the start of the season after suffering a new injury setback, completes the list of Ferguson's walking wounded.

Wayne Rooney, Michael Carrick and Nemanja Vidic are left at home to recover after playing in the World Cup.

However, United fans in America will get a first glimpse of new signings Chris Smalling and Javier Hernandez.

Smalling has completed his move to Old Trafford from Fulham after orginally agreeing the 10 million pounds transfer last season.

Mexican striker Hernandez will feature later in the tour against his former club Chivas after being granted time off after the World Cup.

Portugal forward Nani is also available despite missing the World Cup due to a broken collarbone.

United play Celtic in Toronto on Friday before taking on Philadelphia Union at Lincoln Financial Field on July 21, the Kansas City Wizards at Arrowhead Stadium on July 25 and the MLS All-Stars in Houston on July 28.

They then travel to Guadalajara to play Chivas and United midfielder Darren Fletcher is looking forward to the experience.

"It's a great tour in America," Fletcher told MUTV. "We've not been there in a while. And although three weeks is going to be a long time to be away, there'll be some good games.

"Personally, playing against Celtic will be interesting as I'll be up against a few of my Scottish team-mates. But I'm looking forward to it all really.

"Pre-season is important business in terms of getting fit for the start of the season, but there will be some time for relaxation, which the lads will enjoy.

"There won't be thousands of fans outside the hotel so maybe the lads will be able to get into the cities and wander about and take in a few sights."

After having spent last season playing on loan for Molde, Senegalese international striker Mame-Biram Diouf (22), owned by Manchester United, might leave his current club in order to join Sochaux.

Manchester United Is The Most Valuable Sports Franchise In The World

English Premiership giant Manchester United is the most valuable franchise in sports, according to a study compiled by Forbes Magazine.

Forbes released its list of the world's most valuable teams Wednesday, with Manchester on top at 1.84 billion dollars.

The second highest and top North American franchise is the National Football League's Dallas Cowboys at 1.65 billion dollars.

The New York Yankees, Washington Redskins, New England Patriots, Real Madrid, New York Giants, Arsenal, New York Jets and Houston Texans round out the top 10.

Amid protests from fans, Manchester United's owning Glazer family has said it would not entertain offers to buy the club, which has around one billion dollars of debt.

Do you still want the Glazers out ?

Malaysia United Fans Cry Foul Over Jersey Ban

Manchester United's fans in Malaysia erupted in astonishment and anger on social media Thursday after clerics warned Muslims against wearing the team's famous jersey with its "devil" emblem.

Manchester United and the rest of the English Premier League are hugely popular in Muslim-majority Malaysia, where conservative religious leaders said the jersey was un-Islamic and should be banned.

Social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook were flooded with comments from fans in the Southeast Asian nation.

"Maybe the religious leaders are just fans of Liverpool?" quipped one supporter on Twitter.

"Why this become an issue after Manchester United has won the title for 11 times? They haven't been watching the matches all this while?" said Sharifah Shahidah, a die-hard Manchester United fan of two-decades standing.

"What am I gonna do with all my Man Utd jerseys? And my sons' jerseys?" Sharifah, a Muslim mother of two and an IT programmer, asked on her Twitter account. "Should I cover the emblem with a picture of flower?"

Malaysian clerics said Wednesday that Muslims must not wear the iconic red jersey because devils should be shunned, not celebrated, and urged those who had worn the garment to "repent immediately".

Also off-limits are the shirts of teams including Brazil, Portugal, Barcelona and Serbia, all of which carry an image of the Christian crucifix in their team emblems.

"This is very dangerous. As a Muslim, we should not worship the symbols of other religions or the devils," said Nooh Gadot, a top Islamic leader from southern Johor state.

Manchester United Fan Club Malaysia, which has about 7,000 members, declined to comment, but the fan club's chief, Lawrence How, noted there was no official ban on the jerseys.

The clerics agreed there was no "fatwa", or religious edict, but that one was not needed when it was clearly wrong for Muslims to wear such a garment.

Malaysia is a generally moderate Islamic country, but conservative clerics have issued controversial edicts in the past, including a ban on the ancient practice of yoga, which is criticised for including Hindu elements.

Danny Welbeck,Tom Cleverley to be loaned out-SAF

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson intends to send striker Danny Welbeck and midfielder Tom Cleverley on loan to Barclays Premier League clubs in the coming season.

Welbeck, 19, set up the winner for Gabriel Obertan in the 1-0 tour victory against Philadelphia Union at Lincoln Financial Field last night. Cleverley, who is a year older, was in from the start after scoring in the defeat of Celtic in Toronto last Friday. Ferguson believes both players have bright futures but need regular football. Both went out on loan to second-tier clubs last season, Welbeck to Preston and Cleverley to Watford, and both were sidelined with knee injuries.

The way they go about training and matches means they are two of the best in the world to learn from.Tom Cleverley on playing with United legends Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs

Ferguson revealed that Welbeck - a target for Sunderland - is going through a growth spurt. "This is going to be a big season for Danny because for the last three years he has not had a consistent run of games," he said. "I sent him to Preston as you know last year. He got an injury almost right away. He only played five games and ended up having an operation on his knee. One of the things about Danny that may have caused the injury is that he is still growing. He has a weakness in his legs with the speed he is growing. He is about 6ft 2ins and a bit now. He has sprouted up in the last year and a half. So he needs consistent football. He needs to play all the time and that is one of the reasons we are considering sending him on loan again to a premier division team."

Despite being injured, Cleverley was named Watford's player of the year after a loan spell at Leicester. "Tom is a very talented boy. He is going to be a very good footballer. We are also considering putting him on loan to a premier division team," Ferguson said. "He improved tremendously in his spell at Watford last year. He got an unfortunate injury towards the end of last season and was out for a long time. He has just come back and can play anywhere in midfield, which is always an advantage."

    Natural mentors
Cleverley is thrilled to playing alongside Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs and believes the two veterans can only help his development. "Last year was a big season for me and I hope this one will be even bigger. This time I have got to prove myself in the Premier League like I have done in the Championship and League One. That is the challenge for me," he said. "Playing for United and alongside someone like Scholesy is what every young lad dreams of. He is a great mentor for me - I look to him every day in training and he is definitely someone I can learn a lot from.

"The likes of Scholesy and Giggsy always have a picture in their heads about what they want to do with the ball and their first time passing is second to none. The way they go about training and matches means they are two of the best in the world to learn from. Being on the tour and among the first team has been fantastic. You are watching and learning from the experienced lads all the time and you try and hopefully put that into practice," he said.

Done Deal ! Vida To Sign Long Term Deal

Manchester United FC's Serbian international defender Nemanja Vidić has ended speculation about his future by agreeing a contract extension with the Old Trafford outfit.

Chief executive David Gill said: "I'm very pleased to confirm that we agreed terms with Nemanja three or four weeks ago on a new long-term deal. He's still away on holiday but the plan is that when he gets back the papers will be signed. It's great news for Manchester United and great news for Nemanja and the fans."

The 28-year-old centre-back, whose existing deal was due to expire in 2012, has won the UEFA Champions League and three English titles since joining United in 2006. Signed from PFC CSKA Moskva, the former FK Crvena Zvezda player has gone on to make 126 Premier League appearances. Sir Alex Ferguson's men will take part in Europe's premier club competition again this season, entering at the group stage.

Default Manchester United Taste First Defeat on Tour

Kei Kamara scored one goal and set up another to give the Kansas City Wizards a 2-1 victory over Manchester United in an international football friendly on Sunday.

Kamara's through ball set up Davy Arnaud in the 11th minute to give the Wizards the lead.

United's Dimitar Berbatov equalized on a penalty kick in the 41st minute after Wizards defender Jimmy Conrad was given a red card after a sliding tackle on Berbatov.

But Kamara fired the winner for the 10-man Wizards in the 42nd minute, heading home a corner kick just under the crossbar.

A crowd of 52,342 watched in the first event at Arrowhead Stadium since a 325 million-dollar renovation, although Manchester United lacked such star players as Wayne Rooney, Rio Ferdinand, Michael Carrick and Park Ji-Sung.

United will next face the Major League Soccer All-Stars in Houston on Wednesday.

    RIO OUT FOR A MONTH

Rio Ferdinand has been ruled out for a further six weeks as the 31 year old continues his recovery from the knee ligament injury that kept him out of England’s World Cup campaign .

Manager Sir Alex Ferguson said: “Rio should be six weeks, I think. It was a ligament injury after all.”

Ferdinand was set to return for United’s opening game with Newcastle, but the England captain will now miss the first month of the new Premier League season. It’s a blow to both United and Rio himself. However Sir Alex has the option of calling on quality replacements. Jonny Evans played over half of United’s games last season and is a more than an able replacement. John O’shea, Wes Brown and 20 year old new signing Chris Smalling are also available to play if called upon.

Default MLS All Stars 2-5 Manchester United- Highlights

Manchester United ran out 5-2 winners against the MLS All Stars in Houston. The 70,000 strong crowd in the Reliance stadium were treated to a 7-goal thriller, which included goals by Kiko Macheda, Tom Cleverley, Darron Gibson, as well as United new boy Javier Hernandez.

Cleverley’s goal and Chicharito’s delicate lob were probably the pick of the bunch.

Hernandez received a rousing reception when he came on as a substitute and showed good movement, intelligence, pace and touch to score on his debut much to the delight of the fans in the stadium.

Tom Cleverley will have done his chances of first team football a world of good with a good display capped by a clever goal, dinking the ball over a defender before sweeping the ball into the corner of the net. Fergie will have a tough decision to make as to whether he should send Cleverley out on loan or integrate him into the first team, keeping him closer to home where his progress can be monitored better.

Javier Hernandez Scores vs. United: The Red Devils Fall Short To Chivas

Manchester United landed in Mexico with great expectations and a roaring welcome for their new signing Javier Hernandez. The opening goal in the match came from the boot of Hernandez as he started for Chivas (Club Deportivo Guadalajara).

Chicharito as he is called played the first 45 minutes for his former club, and a golden start as he bagged the opened in the 8' Minute.

The other scorers on the night where Chris Smalling who scored his first goal for the club and the second for United came from Nani.

Chivas was to quick at time for United, and at the break Chicharito changed over to United, due to fitness and World Cup fatigue Sir Alex only allowed him 15minutes before taking him off.

Nevertheless Chivas went on to win the match by three goals to two, but many positive could be taken out of the encounter.

So while the "Mexican" hero might have been on the loosing side at the end of the game, Sir Alex has seen something really special in him even comparing him to the likes of former Old Trafford legend.

"Chicharito has done really well," said Sir Alex. "The players have all remarked how good he is and what a great finisher he is—I think there are similarities between him and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer."

The squad will now return to Manchester, and prepare for the match against Airtricity League XI in Dublin on Wednesday, 4th August.

A number of World Cup representative are part of the squad due to play in Dublin, Wayne Rooney; Michael Carrick, Ji Sung Park and Nemanja Vidic. Also Antonio Valencia whose returning from an injury has been included.

United will then face Chelsea in the Community Shield match on August 8th at Wembley.

    HIGHLIGHTS-
