Fifty mothers who gave birth on Christmas Day, December 25 at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital were handed surprise Xmas presents Sunday morning as Ghana's leading mobile telephony company, MTN presented them hampers full of baby products.

The gifts form part of MTN's Corporate Social Responsibility (MTN Ghana Foundation).

In all, 30 volunteer employees went round the second floor of the maternity block to donate the hampers to mothers whose babies were born on December 25.

Nine mothers whose babies were born on December 26 also benefited from the philanthropic work.

According to the Senior Nursing Officer, Eva Vroom, 41 babies were born on Christmas day and out of this number, 13 went through caesarian sections.

No deaths were recorded.

In an interview with the Senior Manager of MTN Ghana Foundation, Robert Kuzoe, he said Christmas is a time of giving and building strong relationships with people.

It was for this reason that his outfit decided to undertake the exercise at the Korle-Bu maternity ward because according to him, the 2nd floor of that maternity ward, rehabilitated at the cost of GH¢600,000 by MTN, and commissioned shortly after MTN rebranded and relaunced its operations in 2007.

“We are happy to see that the lives of our mothers and babies as well as pregnant women who need antenatal and post natal care have been touched positively and are receiving quality care here as a result of the rehabilitation,” he said.

Speaking to some of the mothers, they expressed joy and gratitude to MTN for their worthy donations.

Victoria Ofosu, one of the mothers present at the ward said she was extremely delighted with the gifts from MTN to her baby.

According to her, she is a subscriber of the MTN network and this donation goes to show that MTN dooes not just focus on making profit but also invest in the lives of people.

Genevieve Ofori Quaye, whose baby was also born on Christmas day shared the same sentiments and was very grateful to MTN for their donation.

According to her, she went through a Caesarean due to some complications but she delivered a bouncy baby girl successfully.

The MTN Ghana Foundation is endorsed by the MTN Group Board as a vehicle for effectively administering MTN’s Corporate Social Responsibility contributions.

In the last three years alone, the group has invested over GH¢3 million in Corporate Social Responsibility activities.
