Default Why are there no pictures of groundbreaking athletes online

I tried looking up a special website for the athletes competing for Ghana at London 2012 Olympic Games and found nothing. Of particular shock was the lack of reporting on groundbreaking athletes like Alberta Amponsah a female weight lifter for the team .....for me that alone merrits popularity cuz I never knew such sports exhited in Ghana.

Is it really that difficult for the plethora of photographers in Ghana to be contracted to take flashy newspaper or online worthy portraits of our stars?

Default Ghana's 2012 Olympians Promised Mouth Watering Bonuses

The Government of Ghana has promised Team Ghana some mouth watering medal bonuses at the London 2012 Olympic Games due to start officially today.

Most Ghanaians have always raised eyebrows on how other athletes are motivated in terms of winning bonuses as compared to that of football but this announcement is expected to quell that long standing notion.

According to the Sports Ministry, athletes will take $20,000, $10,000 and $5,000 for Gold, Silver and Bronze respectively.

The Sports Ministry believes this mouth watering bonuses will motivate Team Ghana to rise to the occasion and do mother Ghana proud.

The athletes consist of three track and field athletes, four boxers, a judoka and one weightlifter.

Sprinter, Vida Anim, will be making her fourth appearance at the games hoping to reach the final stages after three failed attempts. Margaret Simpson and Ignatius Gaisah are the other two qualified athletes.

The four boxers to represent Ghana are Duke Micah, Isaac Dogboe, Sulemanu Tetteh and Maxwell Amponsah.

Judoka Emmanuel Nartey and Alberta Ampomah complete the list of athletes for Judo and Weightlifting events respectively.

Default Ghanaian Boxer Disqualified From Olympics

Ghana boxer and flagbearer Maxwell Amponsah has withdrawn from the Olympics after failing to recover from a broken jaw sustained in a qualifying fight two months ago.

Ghana's Olympic committee said Sunday its amateur boxing federation has pulled the heavyweight out of the London Games because the fracture from a bout in Morocco in May, which needed surgery, hasn't healed.

The committee says Amponsah could have "potential major complications if he re-fractures his jaw."

Amponsah was initially cleared to go to the Olympics, but the Ghana Amateur Boxing Association and team doctor have chosen to "err on the side of caution and not jeopardize Maxwell's boxing career."

Amponsah carried Ghana's flag at Friday's opening ceremony.

With few hours for Ghanaian boxer Isaac Dogbe to fight his Japanese opponent Shimizu Satoshi in the Bantam weight division, the parents of the boxer have threatened to stop the boxer from fighting as a result of disregard from Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC).

The United Kingdom based Boxer’s parents have been agitated by the ignorance of Authorities from Ghana to refuse to officially invite them to rally behind their son who has been under their care in the United Kingdom.

The UK-based boxer was at the centre of a team selection controversy where some complaints emerged about supposed favoritism for him at the expense of other home based boxers. Some boxers were unhappy because they believed he was favored by the Ghana Amateur Boxing Association during the selection process.

The boxer is currently Ghana’s medal hopeful after boxer Maxwell Amponsah had been disqualified on medical grounds.

A close source to the boxer’s family said “we have been looking after our son since, but just to hear he is fighting on Saturday without even somebody informing us and giving us a ticket to witness the fight. We are forced tell our son to withdraw from the fight”, as close sources revealed to Asempa Sports Moses Antwi Benefo

All efforts to reach the Secretary General of the GOC, Richard Akpokavie proved futile.

Ghana's Fly weight boxer Duke Micah has recorded his first win against his Mauritius opponent Jaso Lavigilnate by 18-14 on points at the ExCel Arena on Monday in the round of 32.

Micah became the first boxer to win his fight in the games after boxer Isaac Dogbe and judoka Emmanuel Nartey all failed to progress in their various fights.

The Ghanaian amateur boxer dominated all three rounds with alacrity. The scores were (6-4)(7-6)(5-4)to progress to the next stage of the competition

The 20year old Micah now faces Ireland's Michael Conlan on August 3, in the round of 16..

Meanwhile Ghanaian Judoka Emmanuel Nartey lost out (3:0) to twice world silver medalistDex Elmont in the -73kgs classat the ExCel Arena on Monday, 30th July. Nartey, 29, found the going very hard against his much experienced Dutch opponent and was thrice penalised for infringements against his opponents.

Despite his loss, Nartey made history as the first judoka from the country to compete at the Olympic Games.

The British Army man has been competing for Ghana since 2004 but Elmont last competed at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and comes from a rich family background in Judo: his father competed in the 1978 Olympics while his brother is also a judoka.

Nartey had an extensive pre games preparation with trips abroad whiles also training with his teammates at the Bath University.

Default Margaret Simpson pulls out of Olympics

Hepthatlete queen Margaret Simpson has pulled out of the Olympic games after she was diagnosed of an Acute Kidney Infection on Thursday according to Coach Dr. Andrew Owusu.

The 29-year-old is one of the three track and field Athletes at the Games who was expected to compete in four events including the 100m hurdles and the high jump today.

Ghana’s medical team examined her on Thursday evening and confirmed that she was not capable of participating in the games.

This is another blow to team Ghana after boxer Maxwell Amponsah withdrew from the games last week on medical grounds.

Simpson has been on Antibiotics ever since she complained of the injury three weeks ago in Plymouth, London.

Meanwhile, Long Jumper Ignatius Gaisah will also start his competition today.

Default Gaisah fails to qualify, sole boxer beaten

Ghana’s only surviving boxer in the Olympic games, Duke Micah lost terribly on Friday in the round of 16 of the men’s flyweight 52 kg division at the ongoing Olympic games at the ExCeL - South Arena.

The 20-year-old lost 5-2, 7-3, 7-3 on points to his more aggressive Irish Michael Conlan.

The Ghanaian boxer's 8-19 points defeat ends Ghana’s participation in boxing after Isaac Dogbe and Suleiman Tetteh were all beaten in their first bouts while Maxwell Amponsah was disallowed to fight.

Elsewhere long jumper Ignatius Gaisah failed to qualify from more than thirty jumpers with a jump of 7.79meters

Default Ghana Sole Female Weight Lifter Fails to Win A Medal

Ghana's sole female weightlifter Alberta Boatemaa Ampomah lifted a total of 174kg after three attempts in both the snatch event and clean/jerk event.

The first timer placed 13th out of 14 weightlifters in the (75kg+) category after lifting 73kg in the Snatch event and 101kg in the Clean and Jerk event making a total of 174kg in the competition ahead of her Nigerian Weightlifter Maryam Usman who had failed to record a total, so had 123kg from the Snatch event

The 17 year old placed third in the clean and jerk division during the African Olympic qualifiers, only received her invitation to the Games some few weeks after the International Weightlifting Federation granted her a wild card.

Alberta Ampomah first competed on the international scene during the 2010 World Youth Olympics where she won a bronze medal.

Meanwhile, five Ghanaians have already gone out while two also withdrew due to injury.

The last person left is Vida Anim who will hit the 200 meters tracks on Monday at the Olympic stadium.

Default Vida Anim Fit To Compete In Women's 200m Today

Sprint Queen, Vida Anim is fit to compete in the women’s 200 meters event this evening, this is according to Ghana’s team leader at the Olympic Games, Dr. Andrew Owusu.

The 29-year-old started training three weeks ago at the team’s training base of Plymouth after picking a hamstring injury at the Africa Athletics championship in Benin in late June.

There were reports that the German based athlete will also withdraw on injury grounds.

But Dr. Andrew Owusu who is Ghana’s team leader at the Games Village in Stratford, London says Vida Anim has no injury concerns ahead of the 200 meters event this evening.

She is the only Ghanian left at the games after six were kicked out while two withdrew on medical grounds.

Vida Anim failed to qualify for the semi finals of the 200meters after recording her seasons best of 23.7secs in the Olympic Games by placing 8th in her heat of nine competitors

The 28year old was the only remaining athlete in the competition after all six sportsmen failed to progress with two withdrawing on health grounds.

Anim's exit ends Team Ghana's campaign in the Olympic Games after just 10days.Team Ghana must now wait for the closing ceremony which comes off on Sunday.
