Default Why do we speak to children and animals in a similar way?

Personally, When I speak to children I tend to speak in a softer and more pleasant way than I do to adults... This is also apparent in other adults aswell. The same effect goes for animals especially dogs, cats and animals like horses, sheep. Can anyone give us a reason why this behaviour occurs? thank you.
