Inter forward Samuel Eto’o could make a surprise move to an English Premier League club rather than Russian side Anzhi Makhachkala, the Cameroonian intimated at a press conference in Douala on Saturday.

In a cheerful mood, characterized by lots of smiles and winks in front of a throng of anxious journalists at the Meridien Hotel, the 30-year-old advised those interested in his future to relax and be patient until discussions about his next move came to fruition.

“Negotiations are still in progress,” he affirmed.

“Nothing says for sure that I’ll depart from or stay at Inter, to whom I’m still contracted. But what I can assure you is that nothing has been concluded and as I leave this conference hall, I’ll be going back to the negotiation table with the club.”

The Cameroon captain was pressed for an answer from the assembled media as to which club he was referring to but he sniggered, raised both shoulders and stood from his place to end the meeting, amplifying the suspense surrounding his destination for next season.

When asked about his widely publicized transfer to Anzhi, Eto’o smirked and said, “Don’t be surprised, I could join an English club very soon.”

Anzhi was reported earlier in the week to have concluded a deal with Inter for the services of Eto’o, with a fee of 35 million euros agreed, and the player picking up 20 million euros per season over the course of a four-year contract.

Manchester City was tentatively linked with a move for Eto’o earlier in the summer but has since strengthened its strike force with the acquisition of Sergio Aguero from Atletico Madrid.
