Rooney's attempts to engineer a move away from Manchester United last autumn have somehow led to him jumping two spots to number one in the list, with fans ignoring both his attempted disloyalty and his mid-season slump in form by buying shirts in their droves.
Giggs, meanwhile, made the top 10 for the first time ever despite the sex scandal which turned him into a national laughing stock and sparked a global debate on libel law and Twitter.

Fernando Torres's miserable start to his Chelsea career also appears not to have affected his popularity with fans: the Spaniard lost the top spot that he had enjoyed in the last two seasons, but pipped former Liverpool team-mate Steven Gerrard to second place on the list.
The highest new entry on the list was Manchester United striker Javier 'Chicharito' Hernandez, whose dazzling performances in his first Premier League season saw him enter the list in fourth spot. The Mexican is the highest-ever new entry since figures were compiled.
Exact figures for sales are never disclosed, but Rooney reportedly sold several hundred thousand shirts to nab top spot.

The top 10:
1. Wayne Rooney (+2 spots from 2009/10)
2. Fernando Torres (-1)
3. Steven Gerrard (-1)
4. Chicharito (new entry)
5. Robin van Persie (re-entry, last on the list in 2007/08)
6. Frank Lampard (-)
7. Didier Drogba (-)
8. Luis Suarez (new entry)
9. Andrei Arshavin (-4)
10. Ryan Giggs (new entry)

That's a fair list.
