Singer, songwriter and producer Jay Ghartey has set up a foundation to give hope to Junior High School (JHS) dropouts in the country.

The musician, speaking on Day Break Hitz on Hitz FM Monday said in view of the huge number of school drop outs, he has set up the GH Brothers Foundation in Nima to aid JHS 2 and 3 students who have fallen out.

“What we are trying to do is get young [students] especially around JHS 2, JHS 3 level who have fallen out of the system, rather than let them be on the side and get older and never get back in to provide supplemental education for them to get back into school,” he said.

He explained that, the foundation, “…is to take students who are doing very well and to use music and other artistes supporting my foundation and studio time to motivate them to work hard and at the end when they pass a certain level, to reward them with studio time to be around the studio atmosphere.”

He further indicated that they just finished renovating facilities for the foundation and they are currently looking for teachers to help support the foundation adding, “it should be up and running within the next month.”

Jay Ghartey a Ghanaian-American producer, singer and songwriter has been nominated in four categories in this year's Ghana Music Awards festival; Afro-Pop song of the Year, Discovery of the Year, Record of the Year and Album of the Year in this year’s Ghana Music Awards.

Born in the U.S, he moved to Ghana at the age of nine adopting the rudiments of music from his grandmother who taught him the importance of singing.

He is known for his popular hits including My Lady, So Wild, Black Star and Shinning Gold which also happens to be the title of his maiden album.

Jay Ghartey hinted that he is currently working on his next album which will be released later this year. That album, he said, features some local and international acts.
