Richard Kwabena also known as Chaka the Zulu, a boxer and popular TV commercial face, was yesterday put before an Accra High Court with three others for allegedly robbing a businessman at a gunpoint at Baatsona in Accra.

He was arraigned with his alleged accomplices, Wise Grey alias Biggie, Abass Baba, a trader and Paul Owusu alias School Fees, a draughtsman. They were charged with conspiracy to commit crime and robbery and pleaded not guilty to the offences in a court presided over by Justice Charles Quist.

The prosecuting state attorney in the case, John Tulasi Ofori, informed the trial judge that the complainant in the case was out of jurisdiction so prayed the court for an adjournment of the case to enable the complainant to arrive for the trial to begin.

Just after their pleas were taken, School Fees, the forth accused person, raised his hand and drew the attention of the judge who gave him permission to talk.

School Fees told the court that he had been in custody for one year eight months and said, I did not take part in any robbery and do not know any of these alleged accomplices.

The trial judge explained that investigators in the case had alleged that he was part of the robbery so he should be patient for the trial to begin for him to tell his side of the story. The senior state attorney, who presented the facts of the case, told the court that the complainant was a Nigerian businessman resident in Ghana who lives at Baatsona in Accra.

He said on June 12 2009, the accused persons attacked the complainant at gunpoint in his home and took away his five laptop computers, GH150.00 and a wristwatch and even took one of his car keys and sped off with it.

According to him, the complainant, his brothers and others chased the accused persons and caught up with School Fees, who was then driving the car while the other suspects, who sensed danger, fled in a taxi. Explaining further, he noted that when Owusu was arrested, he had three of the five laptops on him, adding that he admitted to the offence and mentioned the three others to the police as those he underwent the operation with.

He said Abass Baba was later arrested at Dansoman in connection with another robbery operation. Chaka the Zulu, who is also a security man, and Biggie were later arrested at Nungua.
