Elaborate preparations are being made throughout the nation’s capital, Accra for the burial service of the late President, Professor John Evans Atta Mills on Friday, August 10.

The Sanitation and Beautification Department of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly has swung into action and busily painting the streets and sidewalks in white lime.

The Kwame Nkrumah Circle, the Ministries and other public buildings are decked with buntings and decorations in black and red. Many entertainment centres are also displaying the funeral colours, pictures and poster of the late President.

Motorists have either red or black strands of cloth, hanging on their vehicles mourning their departed President and father. Public and private buildings are flying their flags at half mast, in honour of the late Professor who passed away at the 37 Military Hospital on Tuesday, July 24.

The sanitation department has brought on board, the waste management giant, Zoomlion to rid the streets and gutters of filth, all to give the city a pleasant look, before the funeral.

When the Spectator visited the hotels around the independence Square the venue for the funeral and the Banquet Hall of the State House where the late President would be laid from Wednesday to Thursday, their managers were found to be looking forward to heavy bookings, beginning from next week.

A few of them have already been booked in advance. Brisk business is anticipated between Wednesday and Friday.

Food vendors and restaurants are also gearing up to meet the demands of the large number of mourners coming to the city.
