View Full Version : Lagos to host AMAA awards

The eighth edition of the African Movie Academy Awards (AMAA), popularly referred to as AMAA awards, will be hosted by Haitian born international actor, Jimmy Jean-Louis.

Confirming the development, Business development and brand manager of the awards, Naomi Lucas, in a phone chat with NET, said the actor, who is notable for roles in Hollywood blockbusters such as Tears of the Sun, Phat Girlz, Diary of a Tired Black Man among others, will be the anchor for the 2012 edition of the ĎAfrican Oscarsí, as it has been dubbed.

She also disclosed that the city of Lagos will be playing host to the event, which since inception had always been held in Bayelsa State.

Changes, she added, became necessary owing to challenges in the areas of security, accommodation and airport logistics which were inadequate in Bayelsa State to hold an event of such magnitude, which is fast gaining international acclaim.

The award ceremony proper is scheduled to hold on April 22, 2012, though organisers are yet to announce the venue for the event. As preparations reaches a climax, the award organisation has announced a receiving 328 entries from filmmakers across Africa.

Nominations will be revealed in Gambia, Thursday, march 15, 2012.

The AMAA awards, which since inception in May 2005 have been held in Bayelsa State, except for a single exception in 2008 where it was held in the nationís capital of Abuja, are presented annually to recognize excellence in the African film industry, rewarding directors, actors, and writers.

The awards are aimed at honouring and promoting excellence in the African movie industry as well as uniting the African continent through arts and culture.
