How to Write a Romance Novel

Well, you've come to the right place.

Difficulty: Moderate Instructions

1.Outline a plot. Romance novels are pretty straightforward. The story is about a romance and your main characters are the two people who are ultimately meant to be together. Put together an outline detailing what happens to them and list the events in chronolgical order.

2.You should make a list of characters by name and description. This helps you keep track of whether Stacey has black hair and brown eyes or black hair and green eyes. Little slips in the description will almost always be noticed by readers. Depending on the number of characters you may want to keep the descriptions on 3 x 5 index cards. In a romance novel, you usually do not need a lot of characters. Try not to overburden yourself with characters that are hard for you to keep track of.

3.Romance novels are a simple formula. There is a main character, either male or female who is in love or falls in love with another character who is not available for some reason. This usually involves a third character who is the antagonist for the main character. The center of the book is usually the conflicted feelings of the two in love with the antagonist, and may include murder, mayhem or other drama. In the end, all barriers to the lovers are resolved and they wind up together happily ever after. A romance novel never ends without a happy ever after ending.

Tips & Warnings

•Every novelist approaches a novel in her own way. You will find what works for you as you write. Some work very well with copious notes, others work from memory and experience. When you first begin, it is good to begin with notes and an outline, at the very least..

•Do not confuse a novel with a romance in it, with a romance novel. Usually the first is a novel with an entirely different plot line and the romance is only an interesting side issue to the main plot. In a romance novel, the romance is the plot and the mayhem and murder are side issues.
