The General Overseer of the International Central Gospel Church (ICGC), Dr. Mensa Otabil, has charged Ghanaians, especially politicians, to eschew acts of corruption and aim at living upright lives if this nation is to attain its fullest developmental potential.

According to Dr. Otabil, the canker of corruption which has destroyed the moral fabric of society over the years started when most people who are practicing it now were young.

He said the seed of corruption, some of which were sown when ‘people’ started cheating in classrooms, buying examination questions and petty thievery at younger ages should be tackled from the roots and not the fruits.

Speaking on an Accra-based radio station Joy Fm on Tuesday, he also called for a collective action in dealing with the canker and asked that the nation desists from politicising corruption and said state institution and systems should be reinforced and retooled to effectively tackle corruption.

The theme for this year, according to Pastor Otabil, is ‘PURITY’ and is aimed at encouraging Ghanaians to have clean hearts, clean hands, and clean thoughts.

He also bemoaned the politics of insults saying, “we have preoccupied ourselves too much with fighting one another, attacking one another and from morning to evening you turn on your radio and its insults from one person to another. ”

He added that “we should be tolerant and respect the views of other people. We can vehemently disagree with one another but let us also respect their views. ”

Asked whether he would ever want to consider running for president, Pastor Otabil said “… I want to serve God to the best of my ability and my calling is the pulpit. ”
