View Full Version : $100m face-lift for Korle-Bu

Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, will by the end of next year transformed into a first class medical facility delivering quality health care services to the people of Ghana and the West African sub-region.

The transformation of the nation's premier hospital will entail the replacement of obsolete equipment with modern and more efficient ones as well as the provision of additional infrastructural facilities to augment the health delivery system.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, Professor Nii Otu Nartey, who disclosed this in an interview with The Finder, said about US$ 100 million would be used for the face lift of the hospital.

He mentioned that equipment at units like the theatre, intensive care, laundry, kitchen, emergency centre; radiology, MRI and CT scans would be replaced with modern and more efficient ones.

Prof. Nartey said an ultra modern eye centre was also being constructed to enable the hospital to provide efficient eye care services.

He commended the Vice President, Mr John Dramani Mahama and the Lions Club International for their effort at getting the eye centre constructed.

He said the general work culture of the hospital staff would also be improved to make them customer-focused so that they can improve upon health care delivery services.

In line with this, the hospital would embark on a series of training and retraining programmes to get all staff in tune with the new work culture envisaged.

The Korle-Bu CEO also pointed out that some services of the hospital would be turned into profit making centres so that they could help to generate more revenue to support the operations of the hospital.

“As of now, Korle-Bu operates like a social service with payment for services very low as compared to other hospitals providing similar services. This makes the hospital handicapped and therefore it cannot generate enough revenue for every bit of development needed,” he added.

Prof. Nartey said in order to achieve the goal of improved health services, specific and measurable targets would be set for all departments of the hospital adding that monitoring teams would also be set up to measure performance against targets.

He said staff and departments able to achieve set targets would be rewarded as part of an incentive package to enable them improves upon health services de1ivery.

Prof. Nartey, who expressed the board of Korle-Bu's determination to make Korle-Bu a star performing hospital in Africa, therefore entreated staff of the hospital to work harder to make Korle-Bu the most sought -after health facility in the region.
