Liberian refugees at the Buduburam camp are reportedly returning to their native country voluntarily after an announcement by the Ghana Refugee Board that they will lose their refugee status by June 2012.

The decision, which is being implemented by the international community will cut aid supplies to the 11, 000 refugees. Liberia recently held its second democratic election after experiencing years of civil war.

8,000 of the refugees are said to have already gone back to Liberia.

The United Nations High Commission of Refugees (UNHCR) said it has already asked the remaining refugees to seek assistance to either be reintegrated into the Ghanaian community or return to their countries before June.

The Information Officer of UNHCR, Ewurabena Hutchful, told Citi News that the commission had been expecting this to happen for the last two years and is not surprised that the refugees will lose their status come next year.
