Have you ever wondered why you drink or why people drink alcohol? Shockingly the latest to join the list are children who are sent to buy alcohol from a pub or bar by their relatives or neighbours; they have been testing the drinks do you know?

A onetime manís world practice is being ventured by young women, funny enough some ladies use alcohol as a painkiller during menstrual period. Just like any other drug, alcohol is very addictive.

Alcohol is a common term for ethanol, a compound produced when glucose (sugar/carbohydrate) is fermented by yeast. The alcohol content of a particular drink is controlled by the amount of yeast and length of fermentation.

Fruits are used to make wine and cider, while cereals such as barley and rye form the basis of beer and spirits.

Alcohol is a drug that has the immediate effect of altering mood. People who drink it feel relaxed, happy and even euphoric, but in fact alcohol is a depressant. It switches off the part of the brain that controls judgement, leading to loss of inhibitions. Drinking even small amounts of alcohol can affect physical coordination.

When alcohol enters the body itís seen as a foreign material or toxic, so the liver breaks it down and eliminates it quickly from the body system, it takes the liver about an hour or two to deal with one unit of alcohol (8g) which is equivalent to a tot/shot of alcohol sold at the pub/bar.

There is lots of myth about how good there should be an alcohol in the human body, but itís still entirely not clear. Red wine, in particular also contains flavonoids that act as antioxidants, which help reduce the build up of atherosclerosis (when fat builds up on the inner walls of arteries). Red wine seems to help maintain the flexibility of the blood vessel walls but it goes with high intakes of fruit and vegetables.

Drinking too much alcohol will not only leave you with a hangover the next day, but binge drinking and drinking more than the recommended intake on a regular basis can also cause long-term damage to the bodyís internal organs.

Chronic alcohol use is one of the major causes of liver cirrhosis (irreversible scarring of the liver).

The liver plays a central role in many essential body functions including the metabolism of carbohydrates, proteins and fats, detoxification and excretion of waste products from the body. Scarred tissue cannot function like healthy tissue so this condition can be life threatening if not treated early enough.

Excessive alcohol consumption can also cause stomach ulcers and gastrointestinal complications, as well as fertility problems, weight gain and depletion of certain vitamins and minerals in the body. Too much drinking can also increase ones blood pressure which is a risk factor for heart attack.

A 2007 World Cancer Research Fund report showed alcohol increase the risk of cancers of the mouth, pharynx, larynx, oesophagus, colon and ------.

Each gram of alcohol contains seven calories. If youíre watching your waistline, cutting down on alcohol will help to reduce calorie intake. Alcohol can also weaken your willpower, tempting you to eat more than you planned.

Alcohol is often referred to as a source of Ďempty caloriesí meaning it has no nutritional value other than providing energy. The energy provided by an alcoholic drink depends on the percentage of alcohol it contains, but also on the type of drink it is, for example a creamy liqueur will have more calories than a clear liqueur.

A creamy liqueur contains around 163 calories per 50ml serving (Wine Glass), a pint of lager or one large beer is about 215 calories, one tot/shot of spirit contains around 57 calories, but this doesnít include calories from the mixers lastly a standard glass of dry white wine or red wine is about 115 calories and sweet wine is about 165 calories.

For example if you should consume 3 large bottle of beer it means you are consuming 215 x 3 = 645 calories, then add your kebabs or meats to it add the calories of the meat, plus your carbohydrate and others you will add or eat during the day, without exercising you accumulate this calories in your body, stress your internal organs, which in return makes you fat at you waistline, and when you become obese complications will set in.

Letís make our social gathering a healthy one, and to my young men, watch the way you drink, visit a pub or a bar after close of work from 5pm to 10pm, you can count 5 to 10 young men there drinking, report from the hospitals says the low fertility case in your men from the ages of 27 to 32 years is on increase and the trace or investigation mostly due to too much alcohol in the system.

To my ladies alcohol is not a pain killer, cut down on your sweets and eat lots of vegetables and fruits you will have a painless menstrual period, if the situation is worse see your Doctor, donít drink alcohol. Remember when the liver get tired that is it.
