John Agyekum Kufuor, second president of the Fourth Republic of Ghana, celebrated his 73rd birthday yesterday, Thursday, December 8, 2011 and the septuagenarian still has sexy looks and an attitude that make him appear younger than his age.

It is not for nothing that the eyes of the former president became a topical issue when and many described them as “sexy”. His political rivals, without providing a single proof of evidence, have over the years consistently tagged him as a “ladies man” but that could be because of his sexy looks.

...with wife, family & friends

John Kufuor marked his 73rd birthday at his Airport West residence, the same house in which he lived for the eight years he served as president of Ghana. Indeed, he had lived in the same house way before he became president of Ghana and continues to reside there even after his tenure.

Nicknamed the ‘Gentle Giant’, John Kufuor could easily pass for a man a decade younger than his age. Smartly dressed in a black and white Ghanaian textile yesterday, John Kufuor sat in his garden where he received hundreds of guests who turned up to wish him well.

They comprised mostly politicians, diplomats, journalists, entertainers and a cross-section of the general public. Kufuor’s birthday is almost becoming an annual event that gets considerable media attention.

His favourite Winneba Youth Choir and the police officer turned award winning gospel musician, DSP Kofi Sarpong, were there to perform.

It is rare for a former president of an African country to have such affection from his countrymen, but Kufuor is one of such celebrated ex-presidents who command a huge respect and reverence in their home countries.

He seems to be enjoying life after the presidency and taking life rather cool. Kufuor surprised Ghanaians when he recently showed up at the National Theater during a highlife concert and sought permission from former President John Rawlings to dance with the latter’s wife, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings.

For the last three decades or more, Kufuor and the Rawlingses have not been the best of friends and to have seen him dancing with Nana Konadu in the presence of Jerry Rawlings was indeed newsworthy.

Kufuor was born on December 8, 1938 in Kumasi. He is the seventh of ten children born to Nana Kwadwo Agyekum, head of the Oyoko royal family, and Nana Ama Dapaah, a queen mother.

He married his wife, Theresa, in 1962 and they have five children together.

NEWS-ONE wishes him a belated happy 73rd birthday.
