View Full Version : Nationwide Power Outage Hits Ghana

A nationwide power outage hit the whole of Ghana for close to four hours on Wednesday night moments after the Uefa Champions League games ended.

Accra residents in particular, who thought the power cut was just one of those intermittent cuts and was restricted to Accra alone became more alarmed and irked when it was evidently clear that people from afar were also suffering the same fate.

From Zabzugu-Tatale to Azim, Accra to Tamale, Kumasi to Prampram, Ghanaians resorted to their mobile phones to tweet about the blackout in their vicinities.

Citifmonline. comís checks reveal that one of the switch boards of the Volta River Authority (VRA) exploded and that led to the countrywide outage and panic.

Although the VRA assured Citi News late into the night that the problem could be fixed by Thursday morning, most Ghanaians who slept in darkness had their power restored in the wee hours of Thursday.

It was the first time in eight years that Ghana was experiencing such magnitude of power failure. The previous one, which lasted for almost half an hour, occurred on May 21, 2003 just when the then acting CEO of the VRA Jabesh Amissah-Arthur had taken over from Dr. Charles Wereko-Brobbey following workers agitations of the latterís reign.
